Prof at Indian Maritime Univ; Ex-Prof & Head(Marine Eng) IIT, Kharagpur, India
During the thirty-nine years that he was at IIT Kharagpur, Professor Ramchandra Prabhakar Gokarn taught a variety of subjects including Resistance, Propulsion and Manoeuvrability of Ships, High Speed Marine Craft, Ship Power Systems, Stability of Buoyant Systems, Shipyard Organisation, Shipbuilding Management, and Ship Performance.
In addition, he was in charge of the Ship Hydrodynamics Laboratory.
Apart from writing a number of papers and guiding research at M.Tech. and Ph.D. levels, Professor Gokarn was also active in continuing education programmes & lectured at several courses at NSTL ranging from Hydrodynamics of Submerged Bodies in 1975 to Hydrodynamics of Advanced Vehicles in 2001.
He was also the Principal Investigator of several sponsored research projects including Computer Aided Ship Design and Production, Computer Aided Design of FRP Marine Craft, Development of Fishing Gear for Major Fisheries in India, Water Train Field Scale and Experimental Model, and Energy Audit of Ships.
Professor Gokarn received the Excellence Award in Ship and Ocean Technology from the Institution of Naval Architects (India) and the Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, I.I.T. Kharagpur. He has also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award of I.I.T. Kharagpur.
At present, Professor Gokarn is a consultant with OERC Group, Mumbai, and a Visiting Professor at the Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus.
He has also participated in courses in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding conducted by OERC for Larsen and Toubro Limited. He has been a consultant for Alcock Ashdown (Gujarat) Ltd., Pipavav Shipyard Ltd. and Shoft Shipyard Ltd
In 2023, IIT KGP has bestowed “The Lifetime Achievement Award” to Prof. Ramchandra Prabhakar Gokarn. During the thirty-nine years of his service at IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Gokarn taught a variety of subjects including Resistance, Propulsion and Maneuverability of Ships, High Speed Marine Craft, Ship Power Systems, Stability of Buoyant Systems, Shipyard Organisation, Shipbuilding Management, and Ship Performance. He completed his B.Tech and PhD in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1962 and 1971 respectively.
Prof. Gokarn was the Head of the Department of Naval Architecture from 1980 to 1984, and again in 1989-90. He served as the Dean Postgraduate Studies from 1993 to 1996 and was a member of the Board of Governors of IIT Kharagpur in 2000-01. He retired from the service of IIT Kharagpur on 31st January 2002. He was a member of the Technical Committees of the Indian Register of Shipping and the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (Indian committee); Member of the Governing Body of the National Ship Design and Research Centre; Member of the Technical Development Advisory Group on Shipbuilding, Directorate General of Technical Development, Government of India, and a member of the Committee on Deep Seabed Mining System, Department of Ocean Development, Government of India. He has also been a Member or Chairman of various technical committees for Naval Systems set up by the Ministry of Defence and the Defence R&D Organisation.
